Q: Major version upgrades VS customized developments?
If we made custom modifications to our platform, and if you release a new major update: how can we upgrade?
Docs only recommend to create a backup and note the modified files...

Hello!
It's better to make all modifications via the Studio area and creation of own module. In this case, the ugprade will not touch your changes. If you change smth in the UNA or apps files - yes, you need to create the backup, runthe force upgrade and then merge the modifed fiels to back your changes to the site.
